Class Descriptions

Howdy Pardner,

All campers will have 5 core classes and 1 elective for a boot stompin’, high kickin’, whoppin’ good time!  Take a gander at these fun-filled classes and join us this summer!  Yee Haw!

Core Classes:  All campers will have the following classes:

ARTE DE CALIFORNIA
Instructor: Tara Norman

California has always been a place where many different kinds of people come together to live out their lives and find their dreams.  This visual art class will explore the art of some of these different cultures that have lived in and helped build our state.  Use shells and other items from nature like the Native Americans did or create folk art similar to what the early pioneers might have done.

FRONTIER SCIENCE
Instructor:  Jonna Hurrell

Ever wonder how the pioneers made soap or how they brushed their teeth out on the prairie? Learn the science behind making butter, soap, toothpaste or ice cream and try your hand at making some of these things the frontier way!

GOLDRUSH GAMES
Instructor:  TBD

Stake your claim; avoid the bad guys trying to take your gold, or race other miners through narrow streets in a gold rush obstacle course.  You’ll learn lots about this time period, play games that the pioneer children played and have lots of fun!  Scavenger hunts, sack races, relays and games await you!

PRAIRIE STORIES AND PIONEER DREAMS
Instructor:  Lisa Taft

Read and listen to some great stories about pioneers, Native Americans, explorers and animals that were told around the campfires in the days of the Wild, Wild West.  Retell and recreate these stories by making puppets of the characters and acting them out with your puppets.  Create a few of your own and keep an explorers journal to remember your creations.

WAGON TRAIN
Instructor:  Amber Price

Did you ever wonder what California looked like to the first American settlers?  You are invited to leave everything you know behind and experience the wonder, excitement, danger and thrill of life on a wagon train.  Come to the call of "Cookie's" dinner bell, enjoy stories 'round the campfire, and even pan for gold in this exciting examination of early Western Adventures!

Elective Classes:  Campers will have the choice of ONE of these elective classes, which include visual art, music, dance and story telling!

ART OF THE WEST
Instructor:  Sue Scott

Discover the West like you’ve never seen it before!  From the design on a cowboy’s belt to a Navajo blanket, the new frontier has had its own flare.  This visual art class explores the flavor of the imaginary Wild West.  Design your own brand from your own cattle ranch, create your own landscape like those of Ansel Adams or create your own Wild West Show diorama.  You’ll have so much fun, you will never want to come back!

COWBOY SONGS
Instructor:  Joan Miller

Join us on the AAA Ranch as we gather round the campfire and sing the songs of the old west.  Get ready to jangle your spurs and kick up your heels as we sing, clap our hands and stomp our feet!  Yee Haw!

MOVING OUT WEST
Instructor:  Cherie Hill

What was it like to be a pioneer?  To travel in a horse-drawn wagon?  To encounter wild animals?  In this class we will become pioneers, engaging in a variety of imaginative movement explorations, while throwing our cowboy and cowgirl hats on and performing country western line dances.  Also, we’ll create our own Pow-wows to learn more about our Native American neighbors.

TALL TALES AND FABLES
Instructor:  Staff

Meet some of the larger-than-life folk heroes, like Paul Bunyan and his companion, Babe the Blue Ox or Pecos Bill.  Hear about the invisible mountain made of crystal in Montana or the night that the flames in all the lanterns froze solid!  These fun tales from our history capture the pioneer spirit.  Listen to, retell, and recreate these stories or make up a few whoppers of your own!
